Manbiki Shounen (Commodore 64)
A downloadable game
This game is a Commodore 64 port of the Commodore PET version made by Hiroshi Suzuki in 1979. The game is widely credited as the first ever stealth game. I came to know it through the video of Robin from the "8-bit Show And Tell" YouTube channel, and the task of recreating it as a C64 port intrigued me, since it did'n seem to have one anyway.
My version is built from scratch, based mostly on observing Robin's video. It tries to be as faithful as possible to the PET version without copy-pasting the original code. There are some differences in how PETSCII characters were used to animate the little stick figures, plus the game is more colorful, but the biggest change is that this game is operated via the joystick in Port 2. Given the slowness of BASIC, controls take a little arm wrestling but I think they're as good as the original. In this particular project, keeping it BASIC is more important than improving it (, which doesn't mean I won't make the attempt later).
Anyways, I hope you enjoy this little game.
(The in-game title is different due to the original game using a different form of romanization of Japanese words. For the sake of fidelity, I've left everything as it originally was.)

I have never played the original, but this is great. I also included it in my new "Gameplay of New C64 Games from October 2024" video, in addition to the other C64 games released in October.
Thank you a lot. Can't blame you for not playing it. Apparently it was lost for a long time and was only discovered recently. A major reason for porting it to the C64 was to ignite some interest in the original as well. Your video is a great help in this endeavour. Keep up the good work!
